Supplementary Information
In 2017, a study from RAN highlighted several palm oil suppliers that caused the destruction of Sumatran elephant’s habitat.
A similar study was published in 2018 by Greenpeace where Unilever was mentioned among several other major brands which had been sourcing from companies causing deforestation.
In 2019, CRR noticed that Unilever had started to transition into a more sustainable company by keeping up with its commitments to NDPE policy. The company was referred to be among the stand-out parties to achieve the goal of net-zero deforestation. Back in 2018, together with Mondelēz, Wilmar, and Aidenvironment, Unilever signed a joint statement on creating a deforestation-free palm oil supply chain.
The commitment was enhanced to smallholder and landscape later in 2020. The advance commitment encompasses a commitment towards deforestation-free supply chain by 2023 and net-zero emissions by 2039. It also contains a specific focus on smallholders such as providing assistance to obtain legal land rights, to access financial help, and restorative practices.
