Sustainability performance

No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation policy: Yes

Deforestation within current supply chain since 2016: 100,000 ha

Social issues: A RAN study from June 2016 revealed the mistreatments that Indofood, with which PepsiCo had entered into joint venture cooperation, had inflected to its plantation workers. These included child labour, worker abuse i.e., violation of minimum wage and freedom of union. PepsiCo dropped its cooperation with Indofood in 2019, and no longer sells products in Indonesia since then.

Certification: PepsiCo is a member of the Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF).

Supplementary Information

PepsiCo is among the brands featured in a study by RAN in 2020. The study observed that several brands, including PepsiCo, involved in the destruction of Leuser ecosystem, one of the most biodiverse ecosystem on earth.

PepsiCo also mentioned as one of the laggards in achieving zero-net deforestation in a CRR article as it was not on track to achieve the goal.

In 2020, PepsiCo updated its policy on sustainable palm oil. The updated policy addresses the entire supply chain, meaning that the commitment is not applied only for the direct suppliers. In addition to that, the latest policy also set the cut-off date for forest conversion policy on December 31, 2015. It is said that during supplier engagement, direct suppliers are requested to maintain a moratorium on forest and peatland following the cutoff date.
